The Mystery of my Independence

A Poem dedicated to Prof. Asrat Woldeyes
By Zenebe G. Tamirat
In the Horn of Africa where the mountains seem to meet the sky;
Along the shore of the sea that Mosses rolled on: and where the birds fly:
And down there where the obelisks are;
Where the river they call Awash crosses the land of the Afar; And,
Where the waters of the Nile are worshipped by Egyptians
Where the waterfall, they call, “Tis-Abay;”
Dreadfully Roars from its cliff to reach its bed
Where it is no more aggressive but just a friend: And then,
Boiled by the mystery sun that changes it into vapor,
Rises again so high;
There rests Abyssinia;
The country known as, Ethiopia!
The country that the Bible says, “Ethiopia stretches
 its hands, unto God:” And go forward in independence
For thousands and thousands of years,
And there in the midst, not only I,
But every walk of life before me,
Including mother of all mankind, Lucy,
Millions and millions of years ago were born in mystery.
And ever since, except those who left the land, everyone has been free.
Where I was born, everything used to be in a band;
The trees in the jungle stand,
So, thick side by side;
Allowing no passer-by to pass amidst them,
Even the wind could not have passed over,
Had it not whistled the national anthem!
With the wind whistling, leave alone the people,
The lions roar the sound of love,
And the tigers and the hypos, and the elephant dance,
The timid and the wild live in peace & relax,
Like birds of the same feather:
They walk together, they fly together and they eat together;
And when challenged they fight together!
Amazing beings! Amazing land!
So, fascinating, and so thrilling! So, wide and broad,
 A blessed gift of God!
So, now I am aware of the mystery of my independence!
I see! I see! It was the might of this oneness!
The filament of Ethiopian-ness
That threaded us together to enjoy,
The bond that clamped us long, long years ago until I was a little boy!
But later, revolted to forgo and go blind:
To say, “I am Eritrean, I am an Amhara, I am an Oromo, an Afar,
A Somali, a Guragie, a Benshangule: and lost deep in the wood.
Oh! My God aren’t we running wild?
Oh! My God! We have lost those days of Unity,
Brotherhood, fraternity, and sorority!
Can we not make it back once again to enjoy as Ethiopians?
Breaking the sufferance of ethnic-based miserable fragments?
And becoming one, once and only once?

Press Release of the Orome Democratic Front (ODF)

On organization
The Central Committee of the Oromo Democratic Front (ODF) held an historical meeting from July 29 to August 4, 2016. The meeting was held at a time when people from all over Oromia were intensifying their uprising to demand democratic rights and genuine self-government in unison. The meeting recognized that the peaceful political struggle the Oromo people are waging inside the country is entering a new phase, gaining resilience and continuity.
ODF-Logo1
After listening to the organizational report presented by the Executive Committee, the Central Committee thoroughly discussed and reflected on the report. The Central Committee commended the Executive Committee’s effort and performance in implementing policies and carrying out day-to-day operations of the organization. The leadership took note of the strengths and weaknesses confronting the organization. A unified direction and steps were formulated to build on our strengths and also lessons were drawn from our weaknesses.
On Oromo protest
The meeting also assessed the political development in the Oromia region, and other regions, in Ethiopia.  Twenty-five years after it came to power, the Ethiopian People’s Democratic Front (EPRDF) neither democratized the country nor tackled developmental challenges facing our people. Massive violations of human rights and the prevalence of abject poverty continued to be features of EPRDF rule. Frustrated by the lack of democratic rights, good governance, and basic services, the protests instigated by the Oromo protest is now evolving into a country-wide mass uprising to demand fundamental democratic change.  Instead of addressing the legitimate demands of the various peoples, the regime chose to savagely attack its own citizens by killing, torturing, and incarcerating thousands of people. These desperate and cruel reactions by the regime against peaceful protesters proved to be futile as the yearning for change ignited in Oromia by the Oromo people is expanding to the other parts of the country, confirming the inevitability of change.
On the Gonder protest
The protest that started nine months ago in Oromia put the Oromo people in the front of the struggle for democratic change in Ethiopia. Now the movement has started to spread throughout the country. This week, a massive and spectacular nonviolent demonstration was held in Gonder. One of the historical significances of the protest in Gonder is the expression of unwavering solidarity with the struggle of the Oromo people and condemning the atrocities perpetrated against the Oromo by the cruel regime run by the EPRDF and dominated by the Tigrean People’s Liberation Front (TPLF), who have perpetrated extreme violations of human rights in the region. The demonstration of solidarity through nonviolent protests not only strengthens our peoples’ unbreakable bond but also speeds up and steers the country-wide movement, kindling the beginning of democratic change to be realized by consigning dictatorship in Ethiopia to dust bin of history. On this occasion, we call upon all the peoples of Ethiopia to defy the divide and rule policy of the regime and stand shoulder to shoulder in their struggle for democratic change and peaceful coexistence.
Call for the formation of Ethiopia-wide alliance
The Central Committee discussed in detail various initiatives the ODF has undertaken to reach out to various Ethiopian opposition groups and leaders. Recognizing that the relationship that has been cultivated with these groups is encouraging, the Central Committee instructed the Executive Committee to further strengthen the ties established in order to work toward the realization of an Ethiopia-wide coalition that can spearhead the nonviolent resistance engulfing the country. The coming together of various opposition groups not only speeds up the struggle by providing the most needed leadership, it also lays down the transition to democracy and peace. The ODF is happy to announce that it is working hard to materialize the Ethiopia-wide alliance and hopes to make public the end result of this effort in the near future. We also call upon all political organizations to be vigilant of the current political development in our country and come together to avoid any gap that the crumbling of the incumbent regime may create. United we will win, divided we will fail. The down fall of the EPRDF regime is certain. The question is not about if, but when. We need to play a constructive role by leading our peoples to democratic change. We cannot squander this opportunity as we have missed many of them in the past.
Call to international communities
The Central Committee calls upon international community to withdraw its financial and military support to the autocratic regime dominated by the TPLF in Ethiopia for a number of reasons. First and foremost, the regime is internally illegitimate, drawing support for its leadership only from external foreign powers rather than internal forces within Ethiopia. The United States and other members of the international community who are fighting extremism are undermining their own democratic values and long term security interests by continuing to support the incumbent regime. The United States is only compromising its long-term security interests by continuing to support an illegitimate and autocratic dictatorship in Ethiopia. Pressure must be put upon the TPLF/EPRDF to heed the demands of the people within the country they seek to rule, and the most effective way to influence the regime is pressure from external influential powers.

Justice and freedom for all!!

Public Anger Blazing in Gondar

 Public Protest raged Gonder yesterday, Sunday, July 31, 2016 demanding democratic change in the nation in general and the release of prisoners, the return of Gondar provinces illegally annexed into Tigray State Administration and respect to Amhara People in particular.
The provinces the demonstrators request to return to the legitimate owners were formerly administered by the administrative region of Gondar which is a homeland to Amharas but added to Tigray when the Tigray Liberation Front (TPLF) seized power by the muzzle of the Gun in 1992.  “We are Amharas, and the proud children of Ethiopia” the crowd shouted. “Amharas are Ethiopians; they deserve respect as member of the nation,” they Added. The demonstrators also shouted that the unity and integrity of the Amhara people is still intact that the TPLF propaganda will not obstruct their oneness. "Amharas are one and indivisible wherever they may live." they insisted.
The Amharas have been a target of devastating subjugation and oppression ever since the TPLF took power by the muzzle of the Gun. The TPLF led government misappropriated fertile lands of Wollo and Gonder to add to Tigray Administrative region. Some taken from Gonder include Setit Humera, a province most known for its production of the cash crop "Sesame seed," that obtains a huge foreign currency to the nation next to "Coffee."   Another is Wolqaait Tegedie, a hot spot

at the border of Ethiopia and the Sudan. The inhabitants of the region complain that they are forced to be Tigreans while they are actually Amharas. “We are Amharas who lived for a time immemorial here as Amharas. Our language is Amharic, our culture is Amhara. We speak Amharic, express our sorrows and pleasures in the Amharic language and Amhara culture,” a candid speaker said in a Protest gathering in Wolqaait a few weeks ago.   But the TPLF needs this border town as an access to the Sudan via land transportation. This is an important route that links the future Republic of Tigray to a foreign land. The TPLF is also reserving Assab Port for the future Republic which would serve as an access to the sea. It will gain it either through an exchange to Badimie in a negotiation with a friendly Eritrean leadership yet to come or by invading Eritrea when the time comes. It is for this reason they don't fight for Assab today.

Wollo is another Amhara region with which the TPLF would be deep in trouble soon. In addition to the high valued sesame seed farming land of Setit Humera of Gondar, the TPLF has taken over the fertile agricultural lands of Wollo, such as Rayana Azbo Zone, Seqota, Kobo and the like that would staunchly support its people in becoming self-sufficient in food production.   Obviously Wollo will turn on the TPLF with similar demand to Gondar. It will follow the foot step of Gondar in the demand to reinstating its territories back to the legitimate owners. The movement has already started and with the coordination and support from Gondar in the North and the patriotic North Shoa compatriots in the South, the issue will become a headache to the TPLF.

Observers comment that the TPLF had better not mess with the Amhara or will pass away as a mist in a hot zone. However, the billionaires at the TPLF palace are not satisfied yet. Their bellies are tight but still want to eat more, their hands are stained with enough blood and yet they want to kill more. They have become like the idols described in the book of John, they have eyes, they don’t see. They have ears, they don’t hear. They don’t even listen to their loyal friends, the Chinese! They are waiting for the fire that glowed in Gondar to end up in the waters of North Shoa, as predicted!

Muhammad Ali (Cassius Marcellus Clay, Jr.) Died at 74

Top of Form

Bottom of Form

World famous boxer, Muhammad Ali died in his home at Phoenix Arizona it was announced. According to a synopsis on his life history written by breaking news.com, Ali was an Bottom of FormAmerican former professional boxer, generally considered among the greatest heavyweights in the history of the sport.

A controversial and polarizing figure during his early career, Ali is now highly regarded for the skills he displayed in the ring plus the values he exemplified outside of it: religious freedom, racial justice and the triumph of principle over expedience. He is one of the most recognized sports figures of the past 100 years, crowned "Sportsman of the Century" by Sports Illustrated and "Sports Personality of the Century" by the BBC. He is also a best-selling author who wrote several novels detailing his career, including The Greatest: My Own Story and The Soul of a Butterfly.” The following is a synopsis of his life history in full.

“Ali, originally known as Cassius Clay, began training at 12 years old and at the age of 22 won the world heavyweight championship in 1964 from Sonny Liston in a stunning upset. Shortly after that bout, Ali joined the Nation of Islam and changed his name. He converted to Sunni Islam in 1975, and 30 years later began adhering to Sufism.”

“In 1967, three years after winning the heavyweight title, Ali refused to be conscripted into the U.S. military, citing his religious beliefs and opposition to American involvement in the Vietnam War. He was eventually arrested and found guilty on draft evasion charges and stripped of his boxing title. He did not fight again for nearly four years—losing a time of peak performance in an athlete's career. Ali's appeal worked its way up to the U.S. Supreme Court, where in 1971 his conviction was overturned. Ali's actions as a conscientious objector to the war made him an icon for the larger counterculture generation.”

“Ali remains the only three-time lineal world heavyweight champion; he won the title in 1964, 1974, and 1978. Between February 25, 1964 and September 19, 1964 Muhammad Ali reigned as the undisputed heavyweight boxing champion.”

“Nicknamed "The Greatest", Ali was involved in several historic boxing matches. Notable among these were the first Liston fight, three with rival Joe Frazier, and one with George Foreman, in which he regained titles he had been stripped of seven years earlier.”

“At a time when most fighters let their managers do the talking, Ali, inspired by professional wrestler "Gorgeous" George Wagner, thrived in—and indeed craved—the spotlight, where he was often provocative and outlandish. He controlled most press conferences and interviews, and spoke freely about issues unrelated to boxing. Ali transformed the role and image of the African American athlete in America by his embrace of racial pride and his willingness to antagonize the white establishment in doing so. In the words of writer Joyce Carol Oates, he was one of the few athletes in any sport to "define the terms of his public reputation”

Dewol pays a tribute to the greatest and shares its sympathy to his family, the Sports family in general and the people of the United States in particular who lost a great man that is irreplaceable but irrevocable from the minds of every American.

Professor Asrat Woldeyes Memorial day Observed in Los Angeles

         A group observed the 17th anniversary of the Martyrdom of the renowned Physician and Political Leader Professor Asrat Woldeyes in Los Angeles California on Sunday, May 15, 2016.
         In a candle vigil ceremony held at Little Ethiopia Restaurant, attendants remembered the Martyr in a moment of silence. Ato Zenebe Tamirat former Central Committee Member of the All Amhara Peoples Organization read, the life history of the Professor. He also highlighted the Professor's works as a leader of Political Unity and Stability. AAPO that latter was converted to All Ethiopian Peoples’ Party is inactive now. Ato Zenebe declared that followers of the leadership of Professor Asrat observed the 17th anniversary of the martyr with deep sorrow and regret because they failed to follow up his direction. This failure to follow the wise man’s path to freedom ended up in allowing the TPLF defunct the party, divide the leaders and disperse its members. The transformation from AAPO to AEUP should have taken place in a safer way sustaining the existence of the former as a satellite to the latter. The Duo then could have performed miraculously.  “This idea had not come to my mind until the destruction took place and I regret to be a part of the obstruction supporting the transformation during the formation of AEUP.” He said.  The professor had instructed to keep the Candle burning throughout the struggle. Participants expressed their concern about the continuous suppression of the rights of the Amhara to live in any part of Ethiopia.  They stressed the need to reinforce AAPO as a voice to the people of Amhara, who are suffering a massive blow from the camps of pro-TPLF.
    Professor Asrat was born on June 20, 1928, in Addis Ababa. In 1935 when he was only seven, fascist Italy invaded Ethiopia hampering his schooling which had only started a few months ago merely to complete the traditional Ethiopian church school, identifying the Amharic alphabets and reading the Psalm.  He was ready to enter the Lingua Franco elementary school when the invasion took place.
    The invasion was a calamity to the rising nation in general but extremely terrible to the rising young Asrat in particular. Mess after mess tumbled upon his family following the disastrous invasion. His father was sacrificed in the Yekatit genocide, in which the Fascist forces, “Camicia Nero” massacred thousands at Addis Ababa burning houses and chopping heads with shovels. His grandfather was captured and taken as captive to Italy, and his mother died of the trauma that fell upon her family.
Young Asrat was left behind without parents and distant relatives in Diredawa had to take care of him discontinuing his lessons. After three years, victory was achieved. Asrat’s grandpa was released through WP exchange and came back home.  He immediately brought young Asrat to Addis Ababa and managed to register him as a student at Teferi Makonnen Elementary School, the second best in the nation. Brilliant Asrat was never second in completing his elementary school. He was then granted a scholarship to Alexandria, Egypt to continue a high school education. Upon successfully completing the secondary school education at Alexandria and passing the College Entrance Examination with distinction, he entered the University of Edinburg in Scotland, Great Britain with a full scholarship. He studied Medicine here for six years and graduated with an MD degree. Dr. Asrat couldn’t wait coming back home to serve but had one more year to work on his residency in a hospital.
Upon completion of his residency, youth Asrat, rushed back home to act as the first Medical Doctor trained with modern practices after the second World War. During that time, Ethiopia seriously needed medical professionals, and Asrat arrived to serve at a time of extreme need. Thus, a son in need is a son indeed. After serving for five years as a physician, Asrat again went back to England for specialization in surgery. He satisfactorily managed to become a surgeon completing the work at Edinburg and Royal Collages.  Returning to his beloved country immediately, Dr. Asrat continued serving as a surgeon for thirty years at Princesses Tsehay and Tiqur Anbessa Hospitals. He helped found the Addis Ababa University Medical School, which was formerly housed at the Tiqur Anbessa Hospital compound and later transferred to Sidist Killo Campus of the Addis Ababa University and became its first dean. Earlier, he was appointed a private physician to the Emperor and the royal family. At the University where lecturers were always in short Asrat had to shoulder both the administrative and teaching burdens. He was not bored nor tired rather he was fiercely working day and night as a bulldozer merely to delight at the graduation ceremony where he used to gather his products.  He was serious and with no smile at the operation theater, profound and genius in the classroom and cheerful at the result he scores at the end of the day, the week and the year.
In 1974, a disastrous Military Government took power in Ethiopia that killed the Emperor Haile Selassie and his Cabinet Ministers, including the Prime Minister Aklilu Habtewold, who diligently served his country, the royal family, and other public servants without the due process of law.  Eritrean Secessionists pushed forward threatening to secede. In the meantime, Somalia declared war on Ethiopia with a thought that this was the best time to invade a weakened and divided nation.  Asrat was in a desperate problem unable to decide on what to do. He did not like the Military Junta, but the nation had to survive from external invasion and internal aggression. Be it as it was, lives had to be saved as well. So, he had to go the war front and save lives. Treating equally all parties that fought, he gave his services diligently and with excellent performances. He was awarded medals for his services.
In 1992, the Military Government lost power to the Tigray Liberation Front (TPLF) that invited certain individuals and the Addis Ababa University Scholars to join it at a conference in June 1992, form a transitional Government and secede Eritrea.   Asrat participated representing the University Scholars merely and solely to object the secession of Eritrea arguing the conference has no constitutional power to decide on the national issue as no parliamentary representatives served the people of Ethiopia nor there existed a permanently functioning Ethiopian Government at that point.  The conference passed the resolution for Eritrean secession with all votes but Asrat’s.  Asrat then resigned in spite of the TPLF insistence for him to continue.
In 1993 along with a nationalist group, he formed the All Amhara Peoples’ Organization (AAPO) through which he gallantly fought for national unity and stability. He vehemently objected TPLF’s policy of secession, ethnic division and vandalism through an endowment to Tigray. He raised his voice for the protection of the people of Ethiopia in general and to stop the killings of the Amhara in particular. He exposed the danger of “State Land Tenure and "Lease” that the TPLF planned to impose to all parts of Ethiopia except Tigray. Mobilizing the Amhara all over the nation, he campaigned to settle those Amharas that were evacuated from Arsi and left homeless on the streets of Nazareth.
The TPLF did not like Asrat’s movement for national unity. It advocated ethnic based federalism favoring Tigray to benefit at the expenses of other groups. Asrat’s voice, on the contrary, agitated the people of Ethiopia to rise against the policies of the TPLF. Fearing that this will be a threat to the application of divisive ethnicity and economic blunder that it contained in its plan the TPLF arrested Asrat on counts of some untrue crimes. Asrat almost died to languish in the sanitary lacking cells of the Addis Ababa Jail, but officially allowed to seek medication in the United States at his death bed. He died at a Hospital in the United States as the physicians couldn’t help because it was too late. The TPLF was sure it was indeed too late but thinks that it won’t be responsible for making it too late. Time and God only know when the investigation will take place for the killing of the vast son of Ethiopia, Professor Asrat Woldeyes. Time and God also find out when the children of Amhara will rise their arms in search of justice to the killing of their beloved leader.

President Obama Proved Wrong: The Incomplete and Unworthy Visit

By Zenebe Tamirat

In my article entitled President Obama “Turning Deaf Ear to World Wide Protest,” (Dewol, Wednesday, July 22, 2015), I submitted my last appeal to the President, to cancel his visit to Ethiopia scheduled in that same month. If he would not cancel his visit, I called to at least include the notorious Qality Prison into his places of visit list; for that was where he could have seen the real political condition of Ethiopia.
He did not! Because the president does not listen to the plights of the local people among which is I, the writer of this and the above mentioned articles am included. Instead, he listened to the advice of Frasier, Suzanne Yamamato, and others who say they are experts on African affairs. Consequently, he openly admired the fake election that took place in Ethiopia just a few weeks before his visit. Later in an interview, Suzanne laughed at him apparently for believing her story about the election in Ethiopia in which TPLF declared 100% victory.
The situation did not end only by laughter but continued by the uprising of the people in different parts of the country. In fact, some five months, after the president’s visit and his appreciation of the fraudulent election public demonstration began taking place in many regions. In Gonder, where the Amharas live, the peasantry confronted the ruling party Militiamen with arm struggle. In West and West-Central Ethiopia where the majority Oromos live, the people consistently demonstrated armed with wooden clubs. Their demand was to let the ruling TPLF bandits to go away from their region. The uprising spread to East and South Ethiopia. The Oromos are well known for their tactics in stick fighting and mass attack. Thus in some areas, they put Government Officials in captivity and showed their pictures in Social Media such as the Facebook.
A group known as “Tiqur Anbessa” in North Ethiopia declared that it has started arm struggle against the TPLF and had an incident in Qobo region where it says had an assault on an Army Unit killing soldiers and damaging Military Vehicles. The Peasants in North Shoa known for their bravery and fierce fighting are not pleased with the TPLF. Many assume that they will pull their triggers in uprising following their brother in Wolqait, Qobo, and elsewhere.
Imagine, all these took place in just five months of President Obama’s visit to Ethiopia. The Ethiopian revolution against injustice the ruling minority led by the TPLF perpetrates is inevitable. Conditions surrounding the oppressed nation indicate the inescapability of peoples’ uprising.
Out of Ethiopia, North of its boundary, political circumstances are changing. The war in Yemen seems to have pushed Saudi Arabia to seek interest in Assab, sea port of Ethiopia occupied by Eritrea on its secession. There is a rumor that Saudi Arabia may obtain a long years of contract to use the port as a Strategic Military Operation Base. Some even doubt that the United States may also come into partnership with Saudi, in this venture. Many suspect the US abandoning of the Arba Minch Air base in Ethiopia is to shift the operation base to Assab, which is a closer site to Somalia, Djibouti, and Yemen and even Eritrea when necessary.
For now, the U.S has responded to the hostile situations in Ethiopia by advising her citizens to avoid the troubled areas of Ethiopia especially the Northern part. It has also tried to play a role of a negotiator urging the Government to restrain from taking aggressive actions against civilian demonstrators and at the same time requesting the demonstrators to cool it down. But now, there is no safety in Ethiopia. Its advice to its citizens to avoid troubled areas is ridiculous because all parts of Ethiopia including Addis Ababa are unsafe.
The United States is a great nation that claims to have based its roots of Government deep in democracy and the respect of human rights. Its constitution forbids its leaders from cooperating with irrational Governments that kill their people. Unfortunately, many U.S. presidents violate this general code of conduct. President Clinton, Bush, and Obama have consistently worked with the ruthless Government of Ethiopia in the last two and half decades stiffing the muscles of tyranny in Ethiopia.  The actions of these leaders has allowed the Marxist totalitarian leaders of TPLF mow the lives of thousands of Ethiopians who seek the respect of human rights and good governance. The TPLF has continued its aggression on peaceful demonstrators. It has killed hundreds of unarmed demonstrators that demanded justice, democracy, the respect of human rights and maintenance of good governance in just five months from the visit of President Obama in July 2015. This strenuous activity has not yet stopped yet; it is just continuing even at this point.
We had repeatedly brought the political situations in Ethiopia to the attention of President Obama in many forms. In the July article, we appealed for the reconsideration of his visit to tyrant Ethiopia.  We even predicted that the President’s visit would be incomplete and worthless unless he considers the real situation in Ethiopia. As well presented in this article, and, to the fulfillment of our prediction, just in five months, the world has proved from the killings of the TPLF that President Obama’s visit to Ethiopia has been incomplete and unworthy. Bad Job, Mr. President!
